Zakopane in winter 2026/27: skiing, thermal baths and the holidays

Snow on the ridge, steam off the pools, and half of Poland on the slopes in February. What's worth it, and what to check first.

Last reviewed: 2026-11-02

Zakopane has been called Poland's winter capital for a century, and from late December the town fills up with skiers, families on school holidays and people who mostly came for the hot pools. It is a good winter trip if you know what you're signing up for: the town and the lower slopes are easy, the high Tatras are serious winter mountains, and the busiest weeks are very busy.

This page is the winter version of our guide, checked on 2 November 2026. Where a 2026/27 date or price hasn't been published yet — ski-pass prices, the exact start of the season, the town's own New Year's Eve programme — we say so rather than guess.

When the season starts, and when it's packed

There is no fixed opening day for skiing. Kasprowy Wierch, the high cable-car area above Kuźnice, runs on natural snow only — nature-protection rules in the national park rule out snowmaking there — so its runs open when enough snow has fallen, and some years that is well into the winter. Resorts outside the park that make their own snow, such as Kotelnica in Białka Tatrzańska, depend on the weather less.

The crowds follow the Polish school calendar. The Christmas break runs from 23 to 31 December 2026, and the winter school holidays run from 18 January to 28 February 2027 in three waves by region; Małopolska, the region Zakopane is in, has the last one, 15 to 28 February. Those weeks, and every weekend in between, are when the lift queues, the Zakopianka road and Krupówki are at their worst. If your dates are flexible, aim either side of them.

Skiing: where to go

Kasprowy Wierch is the serious one: a cable car to the 1,987 m summit and long runs down into the Gąsienicowa and Goryczkowa valleys. It is above the tree line, exposed to wind, and the cable car can stop in a gale. PKL, the operator, sells cable-car tickets for set departure times, and on a clear weekend it is worth buying yours in advance.

For beginners and families, the small areas in and around town are the easier day: Polana Szymoszkowa and Harenda in Zakopane, and Witów a short drive west. Białka Tatrzańska, east of Zakopane, is a ski village built around several linked areas — Kotelnica, Bania, Kaniówka and Horników Wierch — with the Terma Bania pools at the bottom.

If you'll ski in more than one place, look at the Tatry Super Ski joint pass, which its own site says covers 19 resorts in Poland and Slovakia, including Kasprowy Wierch, Kotelnica and Witów. None of these resorts had published 2026/27 prices when we checked on 2 November 2026, so we don't quote any. We don't link ski passes or lessons either: we only link tours we have checked ourselves, and we found no ski product on Viator worth recommending.

If you don't ski

The thermal pools are the best winter answer. At Chochołowskie Termy, west of Zakopane, the main pools run at roughly 32–36°C, the indoor and outdoor thermal pools stay open all year, and only the sandy beach, outdoor playgrounds and outdoor slides close for winter. The baths' website gives pool hours of 9:00 to 22:00 from Sunday to Thursday and 9:00 to 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Sitting in hot water with snow on the Tatras is the part of a winter day trip people remember — and it doesn't depend on visibility.

Snowmobile rides run outside the national park, around Kościelisko and Chochołów. They are fun and loud, and they cost more than the headline price: on the tour we list, the snowmobile itself is 400 zł per two-person machine, paid in cash at the rental. Horse-drawn sleigh rides (kulig) with torches and a bonfire are the traditional Podhale winter outing. Local operators run them, but we haven't found one on Viator with enough reviews to recommend yet.

Gubałówka, the funicular hill above town, is the cheap, easy view of the Tatra ridge and part of both of our cheaper day tours. In cloud it shows you nothing, which is one more reason to keep the thermal pools in your plan.

Christmas and New Year's Eve

If you're basing yourself in Kraków, its Christmas market on the Main Square is set to run from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, according to Visit Kraków, which says the dates are confirmed nearer the time. Zakopane hadn't published dates for any 2026 Christmas market when we checked. One thing to know at the stalls: the oscypek on sale in December is stored stock or a cow's-milk cheese, because the real sheep's-milk oscypek is only made from late April to early October.

TVP2's New Year's Eve concert has been staged in Zakopane in earlier years. It isn't this year: Polish public television says its 2026/27 Sylwester z Dwójką will be held in Katowice, in front of the Spodek arena, as it was a year earlier. The town hadn't announced its own plans for 31 December when we checked on 2 November 2026. Whatever happens, expect the town to be full that night, and book a room early.

The mountains in winter: the rules that matter

Since 1 February 2026 the Tatra National Park closes its trails from 22:00 to 05:00 in winter as well, on top of the old dusk-to-dawn ban from 1 March to 30 November, as PAP and Radio Kraków reported when the rule came in. In practice, night hiking is now banned all year. In midwinter it gets dark around four in the afternoon, so plan to be off the high ground well before then.

Above the forest, the Tatras in winter are mountaineering terrain, not a walk: crampons, an ice axe, an avalanche transceiver, a probe and a shovel, and the training to use them. TOPR, the mountain rescue service, publishes an avalanche bulletin for the Polish Tatras on its website through the season. After heavy snow the park can close every trail until further notice, as it did in February 2023 for very high avalanche danger. The rescue number is 985, or 112.

Morskie Oko is the exception most visitors can manage: the 8 km road from Palenica Białczańska is walked all winter, and horse-drawn sleighs replace the carts when there is snow. The road crosses an avalanche path below the lake, though, and after heavy snowfall the park has closed it until the danger passed. Don't walk out onto the frozen lake: the park advises against it.

Getting there in winter

Kraków's airport is the gateway, and Ryanair says it will fly 67 routes from Kraków in winter 2026, four of them new. From Kraków it is about two hours to Zakopane by road. There is also a train, but we haven't checked winter times, and the national timetable changes every December, so look them up nearer your trip.

The road in, the Zakopianka, is the bottleneck on holiday weekends and on 31 December. That is the case for a day tour with hotel pickup — someone else sits in the traffic — or for staying a few nights and leaving the car where it is.

Questions people actually ask

Is Zakopane worth visiting in December?

Yes, if you want snow, the thermal pools and the town at its most festive. Just don't count on skiing before Christmas, because Kasprowy Wierch opens only when there is enough natural snow. The Christmas break, 23 to 31 December 2026, is the busiest stretch of the month.

Is there a New Year's Eve concert in Zakopane in 2026?

Not the TV one. Polish public television says its 2026/27 Sylwester z Dwójką will be held in Katowice, in front of the Spodek, as a year earlier. Zakopane hadn't announced its own plans for 31 December when we checked on 2 November 2026, so check the town hall's website in December.

When does the ski season start on Kasprowy Wierch?

When there is enough natural snow. Nature-protection rules in the Tatra National Park rule out snowmaking on Kasprowy, so there is no fixed opening date, and the operator, PKL, announces it on its website. Resorts with snowmaking outside the park, such as Kotelnica in Białka Tatrzańska, depend on the weather less.

Can you hike in the Tatras at night in winter?

No. Since 1 February 2026 the Tatra National Park closes its trails from 22:00 to 05:00 in winter, and from 1 March to 30 November it bans walking from dusk to dawn, so night hiking is now banned all year.

Can you walk to Morskie Oko in winter?

Usually yes. The 8 km road from Palenica Białczańska is walked all winter, and horse-drawn sleighs run on it when there is snow. After heavy snowfall the park can close the road because it crosses an avalanche path, so check the park's website and TOPR's avalanche bulletin the evening before. Don't walk on the frozen lake.

When are the Polish school winter holidays in 2027?

From 18 January to 28 February 2027, in three two-week waves by region, according to the education ministry's school calendar. Małopolska, where Zakopane is, has the last wave, 15 to 28 February, which is usually when the town and its slopes are busiest.
